No! All babies under 12 months should be put to sleep on their backs.
There’s been a lot of talk recently about putting babies to sleep on their fronts, after a well known baby sleep ‘expert’ told parents on social media and daytime TV that it’s ok for to put babies to sleep on their fronts. Not safe advice!
The Lullaby Trust launched their ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign nearly 35 years ago, after research from around the world showed that placing babies on their back to sleep, significantly reduced the risk of SIDS.
The world might have changed in the last 35 years, with all sorts of tech and gadgets to monitor sleep. Baby cameras, movement/breathing monitors etc – they have their place and can give you peace of mind but using them isn’t a substitute for following safe sleep advice.
Tech or no tech, the safest sleeping position for a baby is on their back. Always put your baby to sleep on their back.
If they roll over once asleep, and they can confidently roll both ways, you can leave them on their front. If they can’t roll both ways, roll them back onto their back.
If you’re ever in doubt about how or where your baby should be sleeping, the Lullaby Trust sets out the safer sleep guidelines in a really clear way.
